Coconut oil does not taste like coconut but might be the best option out of the two. If you can, use melted margerine or shortening. Butter would also work (and will taste a bit richer). Definitely don’t use olive oil though. That will taste strange…it’s not meant for dessert baking! Good luck with your cake.

  • tikitiki:

    I’d use the coconut oil.

  • Ricky:

Olive Oil would not be good. I never had coconut oil, but I’m sure it would be fine . If you have applesauce you can use that in place of the oil.

  • yarn whore:

    never olive oil
i would not use coconut oil – it can be an overbearing flavor.
try butter. melt it and let it cool for a bit. add it before you add the eggs and water and make sure it is fully incorporated before you add the water, then eggs.
you could also use apple sauce or apple butter. applesauce will NOT affect the flavor.
you could also use mayonaise (not miracle whip).
please email me if i can help more.

  • Birdman:

    It will change the taste.
So coconut oil is your best bet.

Are you making an olive cake? If you are it would work just great! But you’re not, are you.
If you care about your reputation with the cake ladies, DO NOT MAKE WITH OLIVE OIL!
    Coconut oil won’t be bad!

Do you have butter? if so melt the butter for the same amount as oil.
It won’t quite be the same but it will do in a pinch.

  • Bobyns:

I would use the coconut oil.
The Oilive Oil will have too strong of a flavor.

  • sam:
