all the time? I have some theories, but I don't know, so tell me if I'm right! LOL!
1. It's a stereotype that cats like fish more, so it's more readily available because people figure that's what they like.
2. Since fish has more protein in it than meat or poultry, and cats need more protein than dogs, they put fish in cat food.
3. Most dogs prefer meat or poultry to fish. (I'm not so sure about this one, because my dogs love salmon. But maybe they are an exception to the rule?)
Or maybe they DO have dog food with fish in it and I just haven't seen it before?

  • Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Fish. While Salmon isn’t the first ingredient, Salmon and Salmon Meal are the 2nd and 3rd ingredients behind the Sweet Potatos

  • Happy Turkey Day!:

    Sterotype..
most people buy foods that they think their pets will like to eat. People think dogs prefer chicken, lamb or beef.. where as people tend to think that cats like fish more.
There are dog foods that are fish based… you just have to know where to look. Since fish is not often used as a protien source in dog foods, these are good foods to switch to when doing allergy elimination diets.
Here is a fish-based diet from California Natural, for example.http://www.californianaturalpet.com/prod…

My dog Loves salmon too. I checked with my vet and he said it is ok to give her some when I cook it for myself. Just of course, make sure no bones. I once found a dried type dog treat at Pet Smart. My dog and her doggie friends went crazy over it. When I went back to buy more, they no longer had it. I have checked all over town and can’t find it. Oh well, she enjoys the Omaha steak pet treats also. No, she isn’t spoiled.

    Good theories!
I feed my dog Nature’s Variety Prarie Kibble for a couple of reasons; besides being a higher quality dog food than the bigger commercial foods are they have a good variety, my dog likes to “mix it up” it keeps him interested in meal time.
They make a Salmon Meal & Brown Rice Medley flavor.

  • Purina One has a sensitive system formula dog food that I believe contains fish, but I could be wrong. I think that they use fish and yogurt in it, but I don’t know if fish is the main ingredient. My puppy vomited a lot, and we used that for him. It smelled, but it helped him.

  • magsgund:

There are fish based dog foods. They’re usually limited ingredient and appropriate for allergenic dogs, but there certainly are seafood-based foods.
I imagine it has more to do with nutrient levels, percentage of Omega 3s and other fatty acids and expense than stereotypes.

  • ⊂®¥š‡Ι ∴∴ ∴∴Crysti:

Blue Buffalo has a food with fish as the first ingredient. http://www.bluebuff.com/products/dogs/lp…
I remembered seeing it when I was researching foods for my Lab. I feed him Blue Large Breed puppy.

  • zyllee:

Well I think option 1 is probably the case, but I do also suspect that maybe fish isn’t the food that meets a dogs nutritional needs as well as the other meats, but then I am just guessing.

  • *<3_Gizm:

#2 is the reason. Fish has such a high level of protein its not good for the dogs. But cats need it. Go figure. So if a dog eats cat food they usuallly get sick, mine always threw up about an hour later. lol.

  • JAMIE D:

Dick VanPatten’s dog food as a salmon and trout ? hard kibble and I think Millenium and Diamond’s Chicken for the Soul? has one too. Dogs like it

  • catluvr2:

if your that worried about it by cat food for your dog. My dogs steal food out of my cats bowl all of the time and my aunts cat used to eat her dog’s food

  • trisse64:

    There is fish in some.
If you look up Burns Dog food, they have fish as a main food in one of their complete food.

  • Basset Puppies = land piranhas:

There is dog food with fish in it.

  • kesha g:

because cats are the most likely to eat fish

  • •Poppy• ♥Shelties:

I’m going to go with the stereotype.

  • funluvin:

I just wanted to say I really enjoyed reading what you wrote. Good points!

  • Cocky Cairns =]:

    my dogs HATE fish.
    and my cat loves it.
    i guess its for taste.

  • Jodester:

I think it’s definitely theory # 1. My dogs love salmon too!

  • Bronwyn2:

They do make fish-based dog food. I have a can of Merrick Campfire Trout Feast, with trout as the main ingredient. Merrick also makes it as a dry dog food. My dogs eat a mostly raw diet but I add other things to give them some variety. They also love canned salmon, and the bones give them extra calcium. My dogs have also had canned sardines, but they are kind of gross so I prefer to buy the salmon. (I don’t eat the salmon either, by the way).
Some northern breeds had ancestors who were raised with fish as a main part of their diet. You don’t see fish in the cheaper garbage dog foods because it’s too expensive. You generally only see fish in the premium dog foods. Fish is good for dogs as it has Omega 3 essential fatty acids. (People would be healthier if they ate more fish, but I am still not eating salmon).
Here are some other fish-based dog foods.

Canidae Chicken, Lamb, & Fish canned (Herring)
